Happy 2021! Yes, It is a New Year!

As we clinked our glasses (filled with sparkling pear juice) at the cusp of 2020 to 2021, I couldn’t think of anything else to say to our children (my husband already made the same choice) “Let’s choose to be happy this year!”.

It might be hard to think “how to be happy?” when many are still facing great challenges in their personal and professional lives. I still believe in the world of possibilities (infinite ones!). I remember sharing with you years ago my experience during times of great trials in my life. It was about 11 years ago when I was going through a divorce and facing the challenges of raising three children (two dogs 😉 ) alone. My whole family lives in Brazil and my children’s  dad decided to move back there as well. Dealing with the challenges of financial struggle, mental health and substance abuse with one of my children, learning disabilities with another. The world of “appearances” was falling apart, but my commitment to my practices was steady and determined (the lives of my children and my own depended on that). During one of my yoga and meditation practices with my community, all of a sudden my heart swelled with joy and happiness. I smiled, I laughed and at that very moment, I knew that anything was possible! And it was! I am writing you this message today to let you know that while we have a heartbeat, there is much we can do. Even if the outcome might not be as we wanted it to be, there are great lessons in store for our souls. We just need to embrace them and not fight with them.

Pema Chodron (Comfortable with Uncertainty) wrote “A teacher once told me that if I wanted lasting happiness the only way to get it was to step out of my cocoon. When I asked her how to bring happiness to others she said, “Same instructions.”… We can do these practices in three simple steps, using the words from the traditional Four Limitless Ones chant or whatever makes sense to us. “May I enjoy loving-kindness.”. Then we include a loved one in the aspiration: “May you enjoy loving-kindness.”. We then extend our wish to all sentient beings: “May all beings enjoy loving-kindness.”. Or for compassion: “May I be free from suffering and the root of suffering.” “May all beings be free of suffering and the root of suffering.” (…) This is what it takes to become involved with the sorrows of the world, to extend loving-kindness and compassion, joy and equanimity to everyone-no exceptions.”

The year 2021 offers us a great opportunity to take inventory of our lives, and lovingly and gently replace old and not so good habits with healthier ones. We all need the community to uplift us, to listen to us, to be the shoulder when we simply need to cry (even if nowadays we might need to lean on virtual shoulders-there is no barrier for energy. As we practice sensing and moving energy, we can feel the warmth and peace from one another).

One day at a time. Consistency is the key. Knowing that the power that lies within us can move “mountains”, we understand that we are truly the healers, the makers of happiness, the producers of joy and contentment, and as Ram Dass said: “We’re all just walking each other home.” So let’s be happy together! And when the uncertainty of life touches us with pain and sorrow, let’s love each other and hold each other up high.

Love, always choose love!

Change of Season…Change in Us

The season is about to change, and with that Nature also announces that we might need to go through changes as well . After all, change in our lives is inevitable and hopefully growth from that happens in a graceful manner.

The Farmers Market is already carrying some of the fall vegetables and fruits that the farmers are growing. At home we tasted, this past week, the delicious eggplants from Apricot Lane Farm (for those of you new to regenerative farming and the importance of learning from Nature to grow food, make time to watch The Biggest Little Farm documentary about the Apricot Lane Farm–we will be showing the documentary at our studio soon!), the most amazing figs you can ever find right from Etheridge Farm, the sweet and really tasteful cantaloupes, the San Marzano tomatoes (my favorite! They make the most delicious tomato sauce you can taste, ask my mom! 😉 ).

Coming very soon to Corpo e Alma Healing: vegan chef Dave Anderson will talk about regenerative farming to help the planet fight climate change and also its importance in our nutrition.

Nature has taken care of everything so perfectly that when the weather changes, our bodies can receive proper nourishment from the new crops. Isn’t Nature’s wisdom so amazing? Let’s get educated together so we can grow a more conscious community.

We are changing at our studio too!

Coming this month new yoga classes, QiGong and meditation, community meditation and more.

Starting Thursday, September 12th @ 7pm (about 80min class)
Register on the website, space is limited!

I am very excited to be teaching teens and kids again! Our children are carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders, carrying the stressors of a world in short circuit due to the overload of electronic devices and broken brains. Brain health (and gut health) and coping tools are a MUST for this generation, and I believe as adults we also must model to our kids healthy ways of living.

I appreciate the brave and courageous women that are committing their time and energy to our Kundalini Yoga Workshop for Women (Excel and Celebrate, led by Petra Harbhajan Gordon, an incredible human being and dedicated yogini, always humble, always kind). If you missed the ones that started at the end of August, there will be new groups in the near future!

First day Kundalini Yoga Workshop, group not pictured here.

I would like to humbly ask those of you that know my work and feel that your words can contribute to the expansion of our community, please send me a review of your experience, or even write a Yelp or Google Review. If you authorize me, your testimonial would be added to a page on my website.

Wishing you all a great preparation for the new season, and I look forward to seeing you more often!

Much love and gratitude for sharing your journey together!

Turmeric: a Must Know Healing Spice

When my family and I lived in Colorado, several years ago, I had the privilege to be introduced  to Ayurvedic Medicine and its amazing healing spices and herbs.

One spice that I didn’t use in my Colorado years is now my favorite Healing Spice : TurmericDr. Nita Desai was my holly messenger and became my family’s doctor. I got to learn a little more about what India, one of the world’s oldest civilizations, had known, for thousands of years, about natural healing.

I was introduced to herbs and spices that help to relieve common problems in today’s world: digestive problems, insomnia, anxiety, headaches, depression among many others.

My work can be very demanding physically, as you can imagine. Therefore it is critical that my physical condition, as well as my energy are in balance.

However, in the past year I had noticed that every morning my body was achy, since I don’t buy the idea that pain and discomfort are natural as we age (way too many people have proven that with proper care, the temple of our souls will stay strong and can be pain free), I started to observe my body more closely. As soon as I did my yoga or Qigong routine the aches would go away, but the fact that right after getting up I was in pain, bothered me.

It was after I started drinking warm water, turmeric(with a pinch of black pepper) and lemon in the morning that a shift happened. Maybe within a couple of weeks the body aches were completely gone.

Turmeric, traditionally used in all kinds of curry, contains curcumin.

Curcumin is the compound that makes turmeric yellow and also is the most researched constituent of the herb. Besides not having any known toxicity, curcumin is mainly responsible for turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties.

It has been used successfully to treat: digestive issues, skin diseases, diabetes, heart conditions, cholesterol imbalance, asthma, wounds and so many more.

The main reason I decided to write about turmeric and its amazing health benefits is the increasing number of clients that are currently experiencing arthritis’s symptoms. It called my attention that numerous clients have been in so much pain and discomfort that in most cases the traditional medical approach has used all it knows and the only thing left to be used is the Cortizone injections. Besides not having any guarantees on the results of the injections, they have been just a palliative care, never a cure of the condition.

I believe that is important for each one of us as individuals,  sole possessors of our bodies to, whenever possible, take charge of our own health.

When Western medicine cannot help us without creating more energetic and physical imbalances in our system we can always look deeper within and maybe find answers in the wisdom of the sages and healers that came before us, using Nature as the most potent medicine there is.

Once again my intention with my articles is to instigate curiosity and thinking and maybe together find alternative ways to relieve any suffering, be it physical, mental or spiritual. That being said, please consult with your doctor or health care practitioner before taking any new herb or natural supplements.

You can take a look at Dr. Nita Desai’s work if you are interested to know how this ancient wisdom can help us  bring back harmony and health into our lives.

Food Matters

As we have been walking together the road towards great health and well being, I would like to share with you a documentary that came across my path years ago and once again this past week.

The documentary is called Food Matters. Probably some of you already saw it and hopefully felt somehow inspired by its key message. Anything that can motivate us to make changes to a healthier and positive lifestyle, we most likely will welcome into our lives, don’t you agree?

I was blessed to have my husband (an incredibly gifted and creative Vegan Chef) and 3 of my kids ( 2 teenagers and a 10 year old ) to join me to watch it again and talk about it. I believe it’s critical to involve our children and loved ones in our quest to improve our physical, mental and  emotional health. Knowledge indeed is power!

Since a very early age I remember my mother repeatedly talking about the importance of education in our lives. An education that makes you use your critical thinking and question answers given in the form of: “that’s the way it is, that’s the way it has been for a very long time, that’s the way science has proven so far”, might open your mind to a point of “no return”.   🙂

I guess it’s fair to say that the documentary will educate you (or at least intrigue you) and probably you might ask yourself  “How we, humans, allowed our own race to take this path of self destruction? “

I hope you accept my  invitation to carve some time to watch it, to explore and maybe give yourself a chance to embrace something “new”.  Something that might make you feel so good and hopeful that you will finally feel that you can take your own power back. The power to decide how you want to live your life and how you want to take care of yourself. When you glow, you rise up the vibration of our planet!  Take others with you, the ride will be way more fun.
